Preventative Measures

Unfortunately it’s after the fact that we often think of what we could have done different but if you take these steps you are sure to thank me someday but, hopefully, you will never have the need.

Microchips

Have your dog/cat microchipped. With microchip identification, a pet that is lost can be shown the way home. The case for having your pet implanted with a microchip is a strong one, as the statistics show that microchipping is the best, most reliable method of permanently identifying your pet. More than 5,877,300 people have discovered just how true this is, as their pets were returned to them thanks to microchip identification; don’t let your pet become just another statistic.

Scary Times for Pets

Be extra cautious during unusual times such as thunderstorms, fireworks, New Year celebrations, and any kind of storm. A scared pet is even harder to retrieve and your best bet here is prevention. Don’t let your pet out during a rain storm and if it is necessary go out with him/her on a leash. If you look through lost ads you will see many where the pet is lost after a gunshot or during a storm. We can’t predict everything but we can try. It’s so much better than a lost pet.

Security Check

Check for weaknesses in your yard security. Has your pet found a place to dig that could cause him/her to end up on the wrong side of the yard, are there any gaps in the fencing, is the invisible collar battery charged?

Dog Collars

If you have a fearful dog that may get spooked easily and/or is difficult for a stranger to lure back home consider using a martingale collar during walks. These tighten just enough to prevent your dog from slipping out of it.

Nametags

Keep a current tag on your pet that lists your contact information. This can be the quickest way to see that your pet is returned home.

Come When Called

Teach your pet to come when called.
